Dispelling some myths
But on a more serious note, there are many serious misconceptions about the role of optometry and
the need for regular check ups in maintaining the health of the eyes. Many eye diseases go unnoticed
because, unlike many systemic ailments, there are no symptoms.
For example, age related macular degeneration (ARM), or loss of central vision is a growing issue in
the ageing population. It is the leading cause of blindness in Australians over 55. It is estimated
that over 800,000 Australians have ARM. The alarming fact though is that many of them don’t even know it.
There are two types of ARM: atrophic and exudative, with exudative being the most debilitating to sight.
There is no cure for ARM but treatments are available for the exudative type to delay or halt its
progression. People in that age group need to have regular eye examinations so that the diagnosis is
made as soon as possible and treatment can begin.
There are things we can do to try to prevent the onset of ARM. Stop smoking, eat leafy greens, and
protect the eyes from UV radiation by always wearing sunglasses.
