Dispelling some myths
Another major cause of vision loss is cataracts. This vision loss is caused by the opacification of
the natural crystalline lens inside the eye. Because light has to pass through the lens, cataract
development can cause symptoms such as glare sensitivity as well as visual loss. Fortunately cataracts
are very easy to treat. Some 150,000 cataract surgery operations are done in Australia each year.
Long gone are the days where a stay in hospital is required. Now it only takes about 45 minutes and the
procedure is done with a local anaesthetic.
Both ARM and cataracts have associated symptoms. Glaucoma unfortunately does not. Glaucoma is a
progressive disease of the optic nerve, which affects the peripheral visual field as the nerves of
the eye slowly die – resulting in ‘tunnel vision’.
It is very important to regularly have a routine eye examination. An optometrist will easily detect
glaucoma, by measuring pressure, looking at the optic nerve and doing a visual field test. All of these
tests are extremely important, especially if there is a family history of the disease. Glaucoma can be
treated and stabilised if caught early.
