Dispelling some myths
One eye condition that people don’t take too seriously is ‘dry eye’. This condition is mostly
cause by a deficiency in tear production or tear film integrity and results in red, irritated
eyes, as well as unexplained watering. In most cases ‘dry eye’ doesn’t cause any serious
complications. But if left untreated, it can cause ulceration scarring and vision loss. An
optometrist can prescribe ocular lubricants and topical anti-inflammatory drops to alleviate signs
and symptoms. The condition can spontaneously resolve but still needs to be monitored regularly.
Unfortunately there are many other eye diseases. Most have treatment options available but
some do not. Regular bi-yearly optometric examinations are essential in early diagnosis and
management, especially if there is a family history of eye problems. Children’s vision mustn’t
be neglected either. Many eye conditions can manifest from an early age. Children’s vision is
constantly developing so early detection can repair the problem.
Talk to an eye care provider about any questions and specific tailored solutions for your eye care needs.
