Sunglasses not just a fashion accessory
Ultraviolet radiation can play a contributory role in the development of various ocular disorders.
Some benign and some, sight threatening:
Cataract is a major cause of visual impairment. Laboratory studies have implicated UV radiation as
a causal factor for cataract.
Macular degeneration is the major cause of reduced vision in Australia for people over the age of 55.
Exposure to UV radiation is damaging to retinal tissue in laboratory experiments, thus scientists have
speculated that chronic UV exposure may contribute to ageing processes in the retina.
Pterygium is a growth of tissue on the white of the eye that may extend onto the clear cornea where it
can block vision. It is seen most commonly in people who work outdoors in the sun. It can be removed
surgically, but often recurs and can cause cosmetic concerns.
Whilst cosmetics are very important, all these factors need to be taken into consideration when choosing a
device whose number one purpose should be to protect our eyes!
